Affordable Housing: Best practices from around Europe

Vienna's approach to housing demonstrates how long-term Social Democratic responsibility can protect housing from market pressures. Rooted in the tradition of “Red Vienna,” the city has built and maintained a large, high-quality stock of municipal and limited-profit housing that provides affordable housing for broad sections of the population.

As part of the “Affordable Housing: Best Practices” project, a delegation of European policymakers and experts travelled to Vienna to explore the policies and institutions behind the city’s housing model. Anna Kraft, Country Director of FES Ireland, participated in the study visit, which examined how elements of Vienna’s approach could be adapted to different national contexts. The visit also provided a platform for participants to exchange experiences, foster connections, and laying the groundwork for future collaboration.
