Solidarity and Free Movement: Promoting workers’ rights in the debate on EU migration

FES London invited representatives from trade unions in Germany and the UK and experts from a variety of NGOs to a half day conference to discuss how to successfully engage with the question of worker’s rights in the ongoing debate on immigration into the UK.

A TUC polling research shows that public concern around immigration is strongly linked to concerns about exploitation at work and undercutting wages. This indicates the increased vulnerability of workers, and especially migrant workers, on the UK labour market, which is the least regulated in the EU.

It is therefore essential to emphasise the importance of workers’ rights, and the role of trade unions in guaranteeing a floor level of wages and protection at work. The participants discussed projects of German and British trade unions on this matter and exchanged on practical examples of how to interact on a local level.
