Private Roundtable on Just Transition

In the context of London’s first Climate Action Week, FES and the New Economics Foundation hosted a roundtable discussion on Just Transition, bringing together leading British and German researchers, MPs and trade unionists.

The participants stressed the urgency for recognising climate change as the primary challenge of the 21st century. It was emphasised that the shift to a low-carbon economy must go hand in hand with providing jobs and supporting local communities in order to be genuinely sustainable. To deliver a socially just transition, policy makers must take into account all sectors of the economy, with costs and benefits shared equally across society. The participants agreed that instead of pursuing a centralised approach, stakeholders from local communities, business and government must work closely together, fostering a new form of social dialogue and establishing trust. At the event with the New Economics Foundation, it was concluded that sustainability must become the guiding principle of any economic strategy.
