German-British Parliamentary Dialogue 2024

Our annual British-German Parliamentary Dialogue took place in London from Wednesday 17th to Friday 19th April 2024. The dialogue provides a crucial and comprehensive platform for British and German policymakers, academics and activists from the progressive spectrum to engage in constructive discussions, share insights, and contribute to the formulation of a shared progressive agenda. Sessions focused on EU-UK relations, trade and investment strategies, transatlantic relations, House of Lords reform and political communication.

From Wednesday 17th to Friday 19th April 2024, the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung London Office held its annual British-German Parliamentary Dialogue. The conference provided a crucial and comprehensive platform for British and German policymakers, academics and activists to engage in constructive discussions, share insights, and contribute to the formulation of a common progressive agenda.

Under the patronage of Anneliese Dodds MP and Dr Jens Zimmerman MdB, participants discussed common challenges for progressives in the UK and Germany. Key topics included Labour’s approach to improving the current Brexit arrangements and relationship with the EU, this year’s elections in the UK and US and the resulting impacts on future transatlantic relations, and strategies to revive trade and investment in a level-playing field. Additionally, the delegation visited the House of Lords to discuss the democratic reshaping of the chamber.

On Friday, participants travelled to Oxford to explore first-hand the practical tools necessary for effective political communication in the UK. The trip strengthened the German delegation’s knowledge of Labour’s current electoral challenges.

The exchange offered invaluable insight into the importance of, and potential for, continued dialogue and cooperation between the UK and Germany. We look forward to hosting the event again next year.
