More Union in European Defence

The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung in cooperation with the European Council on Foreign Relations hosted an invite-only lunch discussion with Javier Solana on the future of European defence.

In the context of growing instability at Europe’s eastern and southern borders, the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Brussels and the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS) convened last autumn a task force on European Security and Defence, chaired by Javier Solana. The task force’s report, ‘More Union in European Defence’ was presented on this occasion by ECFR’s Nick Witney and Hilmar Linnenkamp from the German Institute for International and Security Affairs. The participants discussed ways towards a common European security strategy and how such a strategy could be related to national defence policy.
