ICTU Women's Conference: Emphasising Care for a Sustainable Society

The FES had a dynamic presence at the ICTU Women's Conference held on March 7th and 8th in Athlone, showcasing a stand that resonated with the theme, "Valuing Care in All Its Forms."

The conference was a crucial platform for discussing the bedrock of sustainable economies, a vibrant labour market and a decent society: care in its diverse forms, ranging from childcare to elderly and vulnerable adult care.

Approximately 200 trade union women from across the island gathered to debate over 90 motions addressing an array of workplace issues. Key topics included combating sexual harassment, advocating for reproductive rights, family leaves and free healthcare, and creating supportive policies for menopause and pre-menstrual tension within workplaces.  Additionally, the pandemic's disproportionate impact on women and the rights of care workers were significant points of discussion.

A consistent theme across these debates was the importance of collective bargaining rights as a pivotal tool in driving these crucial issues forward.
