German-British Security Dialogue 2024

The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung London (FES) and the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) collaborated again on the annual dialogue on Security and Defence Policies. Originally planned as an in-person gathering on the 13th and 14th of March 2024 in Berlin, unforeseen circumstances forced a change of plan. The spirit of collaboration remained strong however as the event transitioned seamlessly into a virtual format on the 14th of March.

Despite the unexpected cancellation of the in-person event due to industrial action, the dialogue remained a fantastic event. Participants from both the British and German sides, including representatives from the House of Commons, the German Bundestag, and prominent think tanks, engaged virtually in insightful conversations.

Topics of discussion centred on pertinent themes crucial to European security and stability:

  • British-German Defence and Security Cooperation: Delving into current and future prospects for enhanced collaboration, including discussions on a potential bilateral treaty.
  • Managing Russia as a Security Threat: Exploring collective European responses to Russian actions and avenues for strategic cooperation between Germany and the UK.
  • The Future Euro-Atlantic Security Architecture: Examining shared perspectives on Euro-Atlantic security and strategies for integrating Ukraine, as well as cooperation in defence industry and gender-specific security concerns.
  • De-escalation in the Middle East: Assessing recent developments in the region, exploring avenues for European support in promoting peace and stability, and combating stereotypes and biases related to the conflict.

Despite the logistical challenges, the virtual dialogue yielded valuable insights and reaffirmed the commitment to transnational cooperation in addressing complex security challenges. Participants highlighted the importance of multilateral approaches, unity amidst diversity, and collaboration in procurement, development, and investment in military capabilities.

As the dialogue concluded, participants expressed optimism about future collaborations and reiterated their dedication to fostering resilience, bolstering civil defence, and crafting long-term strategies to effectively counter emerging threats.
