Brexit and the UK’s environmental ambitions

In light of the current climate crisis, FES and IPPR jointly hosted a panel discussion on the consequences of Brexit on the UK’s environmental policy.

In conjunction with the event, IPPR launched a joint report with FES on “Brexit and the UK’s environmental ambitions”, pointing out the possible forms the post-Brexit relationship between the UK and the EU could take with regards to the environment. Discussants pointed out the crucial role the EU has played in shaping environmental legislation, governance and funding in the UK. The panellists assessed the effect Brexit could have on the entire scope of environmental policy, ranging from air quality to climate change. It was concluded that after Brexit, strong enforcement mechanisms and more ambitious policies were needed to achieve the UK’s climate targets and maintain high environmental standards.
